AWAH Z3-Fire PPE certified Drill Powered Ascender/Descender

The Z3-Fire is an innovative multi-functional device which combines the features of a drill powered ascender, rescue compliant descender, and progress capture pulley into one compact (210x120x95 mm) and light-weight (2295 g) unit.

Fully PPE certified to the following specs:
EN 12841:2024-B/C • 30-285 kg, Rope EN 1891-A Ø 11.0 mm
ANSI Z359.9:2021 / Type 4 • 30-240 kg, Rope EN 1891-A Ø 11.0 mm
EN 341:2011/2A – 200m • 30-195 kg; T > -4°C • Rope ARETE Task Line Static Ø 11.0 mm
CE0123

DRILL: A powerful, NON-impact drill is needed to operate the Z3-Fire as powered pulley or ascender. The drill requires at least 120 Nm (ok for 125kg), however we suggest 150+ Nm for optimal operation up to 285kg. The max. limits are 180Nm and 2500rpm. Brushless drills are required as they don’t build up heat as quickly. Additionally the drill’s battery has an effect on it’s performance, therefore batteries with many cells (preferably “capless” or “topless” cells) are better. A 5.0Ah battery is enough for short, light weight lifting, but an 8.0Ah battery is ideal for 150+ kg and 200m+ rope length. We strongly suggest to use a high quality brand drill with min. 18V battery for frequent use and/or long ascending distances under high load. We personally use the 158 Nm super powerful Milwaukee M18 FUEL™ FPD3 18V with 8Ah FORGE™ battery very successfully for long and high load operation (select drill below if required). And oh boy, this thing is fast 😲 In second gear this drill will give you max. ascend speed of up to 62m/minute (@80kg for 200m+)! But also Makita HP001G / DHP486 and Bosch Professional GSR 18V-150C, and Hilti SF 10W-22 perform well, as customers report. With less load (e.g. a person with approx. 80-90kg) and smaller distances up to 50m, weaker battery drills with 120Nm and 5Ah “standard” lithium battery are sufficient. The input shaft features an 8mm hexagonal bit pickup, and the Z3 includes two HEX bits by default.

SAFETY: While the Z3-Fire is a fantastic ascender, perfectly suited for rope positioning at height under EN12841, it is also specifically PPE certified (EN341 & ANSI Z359) as descender in rescue scenarios. Even under highest load and critical weather the release function is super smooth and always well controllable without any abrupt movement. The Z3 features an integrated dual self-locking mechanism that automatically engages in case of gearbox failure, preventing accidental falls and ensuring highest operational safety.

ROPE: The Z3-Fire is designed to work with EN 1891-A rope diameters ranging 10-11mm. It works best with very stiff 10mm static ropes, or more flexible 11mm static ropes. Standard climbing ropes do not typically work well because the ropes are too flexible, whereas 11mm EN 1891 type A ropes work perfectly. The maximum allowed load is 285 kg. Note: heed the certification specs for PPE application!

DURABILITY: With a medium factory-service life of 100 km (!) rope throughput the Z3-Fire will reduce downtime to an absolute minimum. The only wear part is the Wheel (rope pulley), which can easily be replaced by the user in less than a minute. The life of a wheel heavily depends on the load, rope type used, and most of all the debris/dirt in the rope (cleanliness of the rope). Note that by far the most wear on the Wheel occurs during descend, therefore the more you use the Z3 for descending with high load, the sooner the Wheel will wear out. An honest approximate life span for a Wheel is about 5-8 km of descent distance @ 150kg load on a clean 11mm rope (no guarantee though). The inside surface of the 11 mm Wheels is intentionally textured to provide extra grip on the rope. During the initial break-in period, this texture may cause slightly higher rope wear. Once the surface smooths to its baseline, rope wear will return to normal levels.

Devices lacking certification labels are not considered part of the CE-approved range and cannot be brought into compliance after production!
Even though the hardware itself has not been altered on first sight (other than the replaceable Wheel modification, which was developed by Andy of LineGrip Corp.), CE approval is tied not only to design but also to oversight measures. These include primarily production line audits conducted by officials of the notifying authority TÜV-Süd, and periodic quality control measures in the factory in China, and at LineGrip Corp. Products manufactured before those controls were implemented cannot be evaluated retroactively.

Units featuring a permanently fixed (riveted) Wheel (typically any units with serial numbers starting with 24* and 25A*-25G*) belong to an earlier production and were never included in the approved classification. In contrast, all Z3-Fire models with interchangeable Wheels starting with serial number 26A* were built on the TÜV-Audited production line, within AWAH’s ISO 9001:2015–certified framework, which documented and standardized the company’s existing manufacturing and quality systems, and adjusted the production line according to the EN standard’s requirement.

NOTE 1: The Wheels (pulley sheaves) sold on our website may NOT fit units with serial numbers starting with 24* and 25*, lacking the official EN certification laser marking, even if they are already equipped with a replaceable Wheel. One of the improvement measures to meet CE/ANSI conformity was the increase of the main spindle diameter from 16mm to 18mm.

NOTE 2: We cannot and will not service units or supply parts for units not purchased through us (LineGrip Corp. or our partner HowNOT2 USA).
